Chavez and Capriles, Barack and Mitt, Justin versus Pierre’s legacy: lately, I can’t help but notice that these leadership races, more than ever, resemble the ones we had in school: hyped-up campaigns funded by popularity and persona.

It’s all about charisma these days. And increasingly, corporate leaders face similar pressure to be the “image” and not just the substance of their organizations. With this in mind, we need to investigate what makes the charismatic leadership style so powerful.

I was reading an article the other day on budgeting for 2013 and the author was talking about the need to keep the IT budget flexible because many Executives are anticipating a recession or worse in 2013. The reason for the expected downturn is Europe and all of its financial woes. I’m not sure that this will come to pass, but then I’m not sure it won’t. Today nobody knows what tomorrow holds. When we are playing in a global economy there are so many factors that now impact us like never before.

What is one of the scariest aspects of change? Having what you know and are comfortable with become obsolete. If you think about it, most of our fear boils down to this. If we know what the future is going to be like and we have a comfort level about being able to participate and contribute in that environment then we are more relaxed about the future and what it holds. When we don’t know what to expect or we know that we don’t have the knowledge at this time to participate in that future we become anxious about the future.

If you feel that things are speeding up you are not alone. Is this reality or just perception? Perception is reality. Time really isn't changing but the rate of change is and therefore it feels like things are speeding up. This new rate of change is the new constant. I don't believe we are going to return to the old comfortable pace of 3, 5, 10 years ago.
